Introduction: God made man in His image and likeness. The plan of God for us is to rule in dominion, to subdue the earth and to overcome. This is confirmed in Gen. 1: 26 – 28 which says “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

(Gen. 1: 26 – 28)

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth”. When God created the earth He took the man that He hath made and put him in charge. God also created the woman so that she can be a help for the man He has made (Gen. 2: 18 – 23). God gave specific instruction to the man to lead his family and love his wife (Eph. 5: 25 – 29). How then can a man show or prove that he loves his wife the way God wants him to? He needs to do the following.

1. He needs to take care of her: A Godly man must take of his wife. God’s word says in Eph. 5: 28 – 29 that a man must cherish and nourish his wife and love her like his own body. Taking care of the woman can include helping with childcare, providing for the financial needs and supporting the wife in other areas. A Godly man should be the bread winner for his family.

2. Know and speak her love language: Women speak different love languages and a Godly man needs to know and speak his wife’s love language with her. A love language can be word of affirmation or giving of gifts.
3. A Godly man must protect his wife and keep her from harm’s way. There are many ways to do this. A man can prayerfully and physically protect his wife from attack from intruders. He should be ready to protect his wife and children from uncooperative in-laws, other family members and the society.

4. A man must be the Pastor of his home: Joshua said in Joshua 24: 15 that “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”. A Godly man must make sure that he is the captain of his home. He must be at the forefront of spiritual things. He must be the priest who intercedes for his family before God.

5. A Godly man must love the Lord: Apart from leading his family in spiritual things, a Godly man must be fervent in his love for God. God said concerning Abraham in Gen. 18: 18 – 19 “And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.” It is clear from that scripture that Abraham loved God.

6. A Godly man must lead by giving: A Godly man must give to God and his family. He should be a tithe payer and should give generously to the work of God. He should support the vision of his pastor and be active in the Lord’s service.
