Introduction: A covenant is an agreement or contract between two parties. Each member of the party is required to keep their part of the covenant. In the Bible, God called a man known as Abram and He took him out of his country and people to the Land of Promise (Gen. 12). In Gen. 15, God made a covenant with Abram that he will be a father of many nations. In order to reassure Abram about the covenant, God sealed it with a blood sacrifice. Abram also received a change of name in Gen. 17: 5. In the covenant God made with Abraham, there are many blessings.

(Joshua 24: 1 – 21)

Because of this covenant, all of his descendants in the nation of Israel became partakers of the covenant blessings. In Joshua 24, God renewed His covenant with the Israelites through Joshua. He reminded them to make a commitment to the covenant; he challenged them to choose between God and the idols of their ancestors. As followers of God and spiritual descendants of Abraham today, we are also partakers of His covenant relationship. As with the children of Israel, ours is a covenant of life, peace, hope and prosperity. It is even a better covenant because whereas the old covenant was sealed with the blood of animals, the new one is sealed with the blood of Jesus. Time and again, God calls us to renew our covenant with Him so that we can continue to enjoy the blessings. There are things we must do in order to renew the covenant.

1. Present Yourself before God: Joshua called on the Israelites and assembled them before God in order to renew the covenant between them and God (Joshua 24: 1). For us to renew our covenant with God, we must constantly present ourselves before our God because in His presence, every impurity will be gone and every sin will be removed. He said in Isaiah 1: 18 “Come now and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” God is still calling on us today to present ourselves before Him.
2. Remember His Wonders and Miracles: After Joshua gathered the Israelites together, he then took them down the memory lane. He reminded the people of all the miracles, signs and wonders that God has done among them such as the parting of the Red Sea and River Jordan. If only we can think we too will remember the many signs and wonders that God has done in our lives.
3. Remember His Deliverances: Joshua also reminded the people how God delivered them from their enemies on their way into the Promised Land. He reminded them of their victories over different armies and nations. God has also wrought many acts of deliverances in our lives that we should remember.  4. Remember His Blessings: Anotherthing Joshua did was to recount God’s blessings on the nation of Israel. He reminded them of dwelling in houses they did not build and eating of crops they did not plant. We also have many similar testimonies of God’s blessings.
5. Serve in Sincerity and in Truth: Joshua reminded the people to serve God in sincerity and in truth and to put away all forms of idols. Today God calls us to remove anything that can stand between us and our service to Him.
