Introduction: Jesus spoke many parables while He came to live in our world. He spoke in parables as a fulfillment of scriptures and so that the people may have an understanding of the mysteries of the kingdom of God (Matt. 13: 24–25) One of the parables of the kingdom that Jesus told was the parable of Wheat and Weeds. In this parable, a man sowed good seed in his field. But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the good seed. Both the wheat and the weeds grew up together and when the servants of the farmer saw it, they asked him whether to pull the weeds. The man told them to leave the wheat and the weeds until the time of harvest at which time the weeds will be removed and burned in the fire.

(Matt. 13: 24 – 30; 36 – 43)

The wheat will be harvested and kept in his barn. After Jesus had sent the crowd away, His disciples came to Him and asked Him to interpret the parable to them. The following are some of the lessons we can learn from the parable based on how Jesus interpreted it.

1. I am the good seed: In the parable, Jesus is the good man, the field is the world and the good seed are the children of the kingdom. The tares or weeds are the children of the wicked one (Matt. 13: 37-38). In every kingdom, there is a king and there are subjects or citizens in the kingdom. Jesus is our King and we are the citizens of His kingdom. In the kingdom of God, there is purpose (Jer. 29:11); there is peace (Eph. 2:14); there is prosperity (3 Jn. 2); there is protection (Ps. 23:1); there is righteousness and joy in the Holy Ghost (Rom. 14:17). We are the good seed that God planted in His kingdom and He expects us to prosper and bring forth good fruit as we live in His kingdom (v. 38).

2. Beware of weeds: While men slept, the enemy of the farmer sowed weeds among his wheat and went away (v.25). In agriculture, a weed is defined as an unwanted plant growing in an unwanted place. The children of the devil are like the unwanted weeds sown and growing in the kingdom of God. Quietly, they crept in while men are sleeping. We must be watchful to prevent this.

3. Produce the Fruit: God expects us to be fruitful as His children and citizens of His kingdom. The fruit of the Holy Spirit are love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance (Gal. 5: 22-23). There will be people (weeds) who will not allow us serve God the way we should and hinder us from producing the fruit of the Spirit.

4. Endure the weeds: The wheat and the weeds were allowed to grow together until harvest time. As long as we live for God, we must learn to live with and endure the workers of iniquity. We do not need to compromise. We can endure by looking unto Jesus, meditating on His word, praying ceaselessly, staying connected and staying protected.

5. Remove the weeds: A time is coming when the workers of iniquity (weeds) will be gathered together for destruction but God’s children will be gathered into everlasting life. The angels of God will be dispatched shortly to gather the wheat and the weeds into their final destination. The righteous shall shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of God but the wicked shall gnash their teeth.
